Charlie Puth, Kehlani, & Dathan and Skrux for getting him out
Today I have some music for you by two artists who have given a little bit of tribute to an artist who has pretty much taken over the airwaves these past couple of weeks. And in honor of Drake dropping his new album, I thought it would be kind of fun to post a version of one of his songs. Now this is a cover, but, it is one of the best covers of this song that I have heard. Charlie Puth and Kehlani have made this popular song one that is very unique and original. This version of the song has a little less of that tropical and Caribbean vibe and takes on a little bit more of that indie pop kind of sound, with a few more synths and high hat beats. Nothing wrong with that though! Having a cover that takes a song and expresses it in a different way is something that is really quite impressive. Now both Charlie Puth and Kehlani have wonderful voices, and the way they harmonize sounds so completely effortless and beautiful. It almost sound like these are two voices that were meant to perform together because the style of singing, vocal range, and sync are so perfectly in line. Charlie Puth and Kehlani have so much vocal chemistry and their harmonies are gorgeous, turning this Drake song into a song that is more enjoyable outside the dance that generally accompanies the song. I also love the way they go back and forth with the verses. This turned into a conversation between two people, and I love that these two artists did that. It is something different but still so cool. Another thing that is absolute amazing about this cover is the way they change up the melody a little bit. The overall melody remains the same, but there are little tweaks and nuances in the song that make it so different but absolutely amazing. Now this remix done by Dathan is wicked beyond belief. Instead of making this a super heavy trap song, he turned it into a bit of a chillstep song. Personally, I think that makes sense considering how the cover sounds. But I still like how there are moments of heavy electronic work, and these moments are balanced out by the levels of chillstep that sit above the other layers. Plus, with softer vocals like these, having something that has more of a laid back approach would be the kind of atmosphere I want. I have to say, I couldn't get enough of this cover when I heard it, and now getting to hear it as a remix is like hearing the song over again for the first time. And let me tell you, I love it. Today's instrumental song is by an artist who has spent a lot of time underground, but hopefully will start to see more spotlight. Skrux is a wonderful artists, one who has taken a couple of genres to create his music, becoming part of a new style of music completely. His music tells a story, the kind of music that sends images into your head without taking a break. This is a song that is full of imagination and wonder and possibility. It is amazing to hear how ethereal and surreal this music is when you close your eyes. And I cannot get enough of how beautiful and inspiring this song is. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
