Happy Holi

Today is quite a special day because it is the day we celebrated the festival Holi! Now this is a festival that I feel a lot of people have seen, or at least the aftermath of, and haven't really known what is going on. But long story short, Holi is a festival to celebrate Spring, and we throw colorful powder at each other and dance and have an all around amazing time. So when I was thinking about what song to post, I thought it had to be related to Holi in some way. I mean why not? Gives me a chance to throw some Indian music your way as well, keeping things interested. So with the idea of cultural history in mind, today I have some of the most iconic Holi songs for you. Now this is a festival that has been celebrated for hundreds of years, but there is a limited number of songs that are classic for this event. This first song is probably the most iconic song of them all. This comes from an older Hindi film, one that was very popular, and is one that has very notable songs. Now while I personally don't watch many older Bollywood films, even I had experience with this song. It is one of those classics that everyone knows and loves. It is the kind of song that we all think of when the mind drifts to Holi. This song features a lot of older Indian music styles, with a heavier emphasis on the instrumentals fo the song. Lyrics don't have as much of an importance because this is meant first and foremost as a song to dance to. The main idea of the song is talking about how Holi is a time when color rains and leaves the world drenched in beautiful vitality and brilliance. Seems pretty appropriate to me! Now this second song has become somewhat of a Holi staple for younger generations. This song comes from the movie Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. This is a more recent film, one that was more low key but ended becoming a sensation around the world. What I love about this movie is that it is so pertinent and relavent to millenials. The entire movie revolves around the thought process of milennials, how we live lives that are so different from the past. And this song is not only a popular Holi song amongst people my age, but it has gained so much traction as a fantastic Holi song to play. This is very different from the first song, in terms of musical sound. The first song had a lot more classical elements to it, with a lot more instruments and more complicated instrumentals. This second song is one that has a lot more energy to it, but also offers more simplicity in melody and beat. Whichever style is more your speed, it doesn't really matter. Both songs have something to offer beyond a simple cultural element. But I am glad to be able to present two of the biggest songs in Holi. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
