Glades and Troye Sivan
Today I have music for you by the Australian trio known as Glades. This is a band that definitely falls under the indie and underground side of music. What is really cool about this band, is that they really are a band. While they don't forgo the use of synthesizers and programmed melodies, Glades uses actual instruments, the kind that you have to strum or tap. We are at a point in time in music when even rock bands are really starting to get into using electronics to make their music, that sometimes I feel like we have lost and forgotten what it is like to use actual instruments. But Glades is kind of cool in the sense that we get a great balance between the two kinds of musicality. And that goes to show that it is possible! But this song is one of those songs that has a really atmospheric sound to it. There is something so feathery and light, something a little airy and free about this song. I don't feel tied to the ground even though I do have a sense of grounding. And I don't feel like I am soaring aimlessly, without a sense of direction or location. This song makes me feel that balance between being grounded, but allowing my emotions and ideas run free and explore. This song is an infectious blend between electronic sounds and pop and indie rock, which is something kind of cool! Glades has a female lead singer, and what gives this song such an ethereal sound, is her voice and her vocals. They are very soft and dreamy, offering up this sense of little resistance. They may not be the strongest and most powerful of vocals, but then again this song is not about being strong and having that kind of prowess. The gentle vocals in this song give a completeness to the song. The instrumentals are great, and they frame the melody and harmonies incredible well. But it is the tenderness and softness in the vocals that soften all the edges. Any sense of roughness in the song is masked by the fact that the female vocals are smoothing everything over. She creates this dreamy-like state, offering up the term dream pop to describe a large portion of this song. There a slight and subtle and soft elation in the song, leaving us a little spellbound and mesmerized for sure. Glades is the kind of group that we should really be looking out for! Bands like this are out there, it is just a matter of finding them! But I know we can do it, even if we only ever explore one lap around. In any case, this is a song that has the ability to apply to everything you think and believe. Today's instrumental song is from the solo artist known as Troye Sivan. This is a singer that I am in love with, because his music has so much depth and complexity in both lyrics and performance. I love the way Troye Sivan experiments with his percussion and melodies, while never straying too far from the general style that Troye Sivan's music clearly embodies. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
