SuperBowl Sunday With Coldplay and Lady Gaga
Today was SUPERBOWL SUNDAY!!! For those of you who aren't familiar with it, the Superbowl is the American football championship, and is our biggest sporting event of the year. That being said, of course it is going to be more than just a football game. It is a show, a performance, a spectacle! This is the game of the year that everyone wants to be a part of. From going to watch parties to making sure you see every commercial, the Superbowl is an event that is highly looked forward to and is weirdly enough, one of the biggest traditions in America. Now since we have a game this big, there is a halftime show in which an artist or set of artists perform. And this year, it was one of the bands most dear to me, Coldplay. Now I am going to be honest with you and say that this was the greatest halftime show I have ever seen. Coldplay is more than just a music group. They are genuine artists, lovers of their craft. They don't perform, they put on a show, and an unforgettable one at that. For some people, music is something they listen to while doing some sort of tedious task. For others, it is something to jam to and get your groove on. For some, music is a livelihood, something to be appreciated and respected for providing a means of survival. And then for a rare number of us, music is our life force. It runs through our veins, powering everything we have and fueling every emotion we have. Music pulses throughout our bodies and is such an integral part of us, that to separate the human from the music is like ripping out a part of their soul. It would be like removing a limb from the body, something that we desperately want and need to remain intact. Coldplay's performance at the Superbowl reminded me of that fact. I won't lie, I was kind of an ecstatic mess when Coldplay first came on. I couldn't contain my excitement and I went into fangirl mode, something that happens very rarely. But Coldplay is a band that has such a special and dear place in my heart. They write music that will last throughout the ages, the kind of music that speaks to the soul and the heart. They write music that transcends age and time and race and gender, and appeals to the humanity of life. And that intense love and care for the world, well that is very present in their music. And I felt that so strongly with today's performance. It was very much in the Coldplay fashion, being something lively and upbeat and energizing and exciting. It was something that made me want to get on my feet and dance, and of course had me singing along in full force. And to top it off, the performance itself was done with such class and beauty, featuring a children's orchestra to play one of their hit songs, and having a splendid display of dancers in all colors of the rainbow. The greatest part though, was the ending, and Coldplay ended with one of the greatest and simplest and most profound messages of them all. Perfectly enough,it was set to the greatest Coldplay song of all time, and the change in the lyrics was one of the most moving moments I have seen on television. Coldplay does not do anything for the sake of looking good, but always has a message they want to leave behind. And I can tell you, they left behind something that was so powerful and wonderful and beautiful. I was speechless at the end of the performance because of how brilliantly done it was. There are times when the moment seizes us and catches us in its grip, making us slow down and appreciate everything in that moment. I can tell you for a fact, that this was one of those times. So in honor of the absolute magic that was the halftime show, I have found a video of it on YouTube. The visual quality is not the best, that is for sure, but you do get to hear the enchanting music that they provided, along with their special guests. Today's second song is again from the Superbowl. Lady Gaga had the honor of singing the national anthem at the beginning of the game. The national anthem is something that is a normal occurrence at the game, but singing it in this manner is something we have not heard. Lady Gaga left me completely awe struck. I had chills running up and down my arms while she was singing the anthem. I had no idea Lady Gaga had this kind of vocal power within her. I mean she blew the roof off the stadium! With a strong and clear voice, one that showed immense control and passion, Lady Gaga belted out the song of the United States. And this was one of the most incredible renditions I have ever heard. I mean to throw an opera spin on the song is one thing, but for a pop start to do so, and with such class? Generally unheard of. I enjoyed every second of it, relished it actually. You may want to fast forward a tad bit if you want to hear just Lady Gaga sing, but at least the video has good quality! I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
