Professor Green and The Script
Today I have music for you by the British rapper known as Professor Green. In a way, he is kind of like the British version of Eminem. But the ability to rap is pretty much where this comparison ends. Professor Green is a rapper who has an incredibly dark and hard past, something that he has turned into the music he produces today. This is a song that has the ability to leave you so speechless because of the depth of the song and the meaning of the lyrics. There aren't many popular rappers out there now who rap about the struggles of everyday living, the struggles that aren't necessarily about race or gender, but more about the human condition. Professor Green takes a very hushed up topic, and expands on its impact in his own life with this song. The lyrical content of this song is personal and so close to his heart, that you cannot simply compare it to any other artist out there. And that history, that wealth of emotional buildup and pain and recovery is what makes this such a wonderfully beautiful and moving song. While there are some shortcomings to the song, that all gets overshadowed by the brilliantly frustrated Professor Green. A lot of people have criticized Professor Green of being too angry and shoddy in the rap department. Whether that is normally the case is something that I need to discover more for myself. But in this song, that works very well. The content of the song makes it something that needs to have those darker emotions pull forward. After all, the song is about how Professor Green lost his father, and the aftermath of that tragedy. The angst in his voice adds so much more to the song, making it a song full of dimensions. We get an inside into his turbulent past, and he willing lets us in. This is something that is both very brave and very moving. The chorus is sung by Emeli Sande, an artist who has a stadium sized voice. She is a powerhouse, with the ability to pour all emotions into every note no matter how strong or vulnerable. I love her work because every song has meaning and something very special about them. Her musicality is absolutely brilliant, and her voice scintillates in this song. Today's instrumental song is by The Script. I don't know why, but when I heard the first song, I immediately thought of this one. Maybe it is because it talks about bringing yourself up from the dredges of mud, picking yourself up and moving forward. Maybe because I mentally made a musical connection between the two songs. Or maybe it is because on one had, we have a song that talks about the darkest moments in a person's life. And then we have this song, one that sings about the infinite capabilities and dreams we have. Either way, I really do love this song! I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
