Six Def and The Black Keys

Today I have some music for you by an artist known as Six Def. It has been such a long time since I have posted anything rock related, and the craving for this kind of music was way too strong. This song is probably best known for being featured on the television show Suits. I actually first heard of this band through that show as well, so one point for TV! But this is the kind of song that makes you feel really suave and makes you walk with a kind of swagger. This is the kind of song that makes you feel like you can walk into a room like you own the place. Which is one of my all time favorite things about this subgenre of rock music. It isn't hard hitting like heavy metal, nor overly synthesized like indie pop rock. There is this gritty element to blues rock that can be equated to something like a dusty plain out of an old cowboy movie. This song is dripping in that kind of sense, as if you are holstered up and walking around like a sheriff. Which probably seems like a silly comparison, but when you hear the song it will make more sense. The thing about this song is that the guitar can make or break it. Most of the melody and percussion comes from the guitar line. I mean don't get me wrong, there is definitely percussion in the song, but most of power comes from how the guitar is played. The way the vocals are done is pretty cool! The singing has a muffled and fuzzed out texture to it so that it doesn't have the clear crispness of other singers. I love it when artists do that to their voice because it makes their voice even more intriguing, and drives the song a sense of suspense and/or intensity. Six Def does a really good job of creating that kind of rock sound that has a folk twist to it. This kind of style is one that we don't hear much of anymore unless you actively seek out that genre group. But when you hear this song, you can tell how incredibly smooth the song is. Though it may have a gruff sound to it overall, the smoothness is something that has to be experienced. Six Def is the kind of artist that makes you want more of his music, so hopefully you will go check out the rest of his stuff! Today's instrumental song is by The Black Keys. This is a band that has perfected blues rock. From their inception, rock was a style I could always associate with The Black Keys. That muffled vocalization is used in their songs and they love to employ the use of just a guitar and drum set. Which honestly makes the music more raw and free flowing. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
