Miley Cyrus and Pearl Harbor
Today I have music by an artist who seemed to take a lot of heat from the press during this year's early award season. Miley Cyrus is one very interesting performer. I call her a performer because she is a great singer, but is also someone focused on the production value of her shows. Which is not a problem! To each their own. But Miley Cyrus is generally known for being strange, eclectic, and someone who represents the "rebellious" side of teenage life. But very few times do we get to hear the more vulnerable side of her. In fact, a lot of times, her ability as a singer and artist is lost in the nonsense that gets layered on by the critics and press and paparazzi. This song by Miley Cyrus is my favorite one by her, and to me, this is such a beautiful and true expression of the soul. I can't help but think about how beautiful this song is, especially when compared to the other work we have had from Miley Cyrus. This song was the one that really really impressed me and showed me that there is so much more to Miley Cyrus than just being a pop star. This song is absolutely unabashed romantic ballad, the kind that you can tell is sung for that one special person. This song has this raw beauty to it, that complete vulnerability that allows you to bare your feelings and emotions to the world. A bold move and subtly bold song because Miley Cyrus was that open about her feelings. And we get this idea of destructive dependence, something that is a theme that we see a lot but don't really talk about. It isn't to the point where things get detrimental, but just the idea of having that much feeling towards someone, and wanting them to feel that incredible strength. Miley Cyrus uses her throaty vocals to make this a song that has vulnerability and strength, creating a sound that is emotionally mature. I love the fact that this song is not provocative in the slightest. The entire album that follows this one particular song is full of raunchier and more provocative themes. But this one has a graceful power to it, something almost elegant. She abandons the idea of casual and fleeting relationships for something that represents a true romance, what it is like to truly love. What I love about this song is how stripped away it is. There is this simplicity and tranquility to it. This is a very demo-like song, one that has all other extras taken off, leaving us with the bare bones of the song. Which is so perfect for how completely open and vulnerable Miley Cyrus is being in this song. I mean all we have is a percussion beat, strings, and a piano. That simplicity is what gives the song such an emotive sound to it, and the strings give the song a great sense of flow and smoothness. I have to be totally honest, I have never been the biggest fan of Miley Cyrus. But this song completely took me by surprise and took my breath away. I didn't expect to hear this level of beauty and vulnerability from an artist like Miley Cyrus, and I think this is a brilliantly done song. Absolutely enchanting. Today's instrumental song is from the movie Pearl Harbor. While this does not have a lot of musicality similarities to the first song, there is still this sense of delicate romance in this composition. I fell in love with this score when I first saw the movie, and this is the one composition that always stood out for me. There is this soul enriching and spellbinding wonder to this piece, and that is something I will always love about it. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
