Jessie Ware and Sia

Today I have some more underground music for you. What I love about the underground scene is that there is no real genre specific sound that defines what underground music is. Today's song falls in line with the more R&B and electronica kind of sound. This is like the more underground European pop scene, which honestly is really cool to me. The thing that I like so much about European music is that their sound is so completely different from American pop music. Which is really funny because a lot of people think Western music is one big group of similar sounding music. But how completely wrong that is! European pop seems to have more depth to it in my opinion. It is not necessarily the happy and bubbly kind of pop that we have in the States, but it is something that relies heavily on creating a sound that mixes electronic work with other sounds, generally R&B. Which is why I love this song! This song is by the English singer-songwriter Jessie Ware. And yes, she is definitely an European pop singer. This song features a really smooth mix between the electronic nature of music and the simple drums and guitar licks. This song is more of a synth song than an EDM kind of song which is a nice change from the somewhat overload of EDM that we have had recently. There is this deep thrum to the song, with these soaring synths layered on top. And then it gives way to this kind of sound that relies heavily on guitar picks. I actually haven't heard that kind of guitar work in newer music for quite a while. And this kind of instrumentation fits splendidly with Jessie Ware's voice. She does have a deeper, and slightly raspy voice. I really like that! It has a really full sound to it, a sound that reminds me a lot of Imogen Heap. In this song, we get that calm request for a sense of intimacy. It is this smooth and gentle asking for something more, not clingy, but not wanting to be alone either. Jessie Ware has an absolutely beautiful and soulful voice. There is this emotive nature to the way she sings, making us understand the story she is trying to tell us. And that is something that makes a song great. Being able to connect to it on a level other than just "it is catchy." Today's instrumental song is by Sia. While she has started to blow up lately, a lot of her music still remains more undiscovered. Sia is the kind of artist who has a lot to offer because of her dexterity in the business. She can write, sing, perform, and produce. Quite the versatile person. This song is a particularly good paring with the first song because they both have that disco-ish kind of feel to it. Both songs have that modern disco energy while also being somewhat of a slow jam. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
