Sonu Nigam and Hachiko
Today I have some more Indian music for you. I know I posted a Bollywood song two days ago, but I have not been able to get this song out of my head. This song comes from a very short era around 2006 of Bollywood music that took this beautiful, contemporary route. You can really hear that in this song. The thing that made this short span of time so special in terms of music, was that everything was very heartfelt and had an older twist to the way things sounded. A lot of the music composed had this beautiful call and response kind of thing with both the lyrics and the instrumentals of the song. In this song, we get that call and response with the piano and the flute, which I find absolutely gorgeous. The characteristic of this time period of music is the inclusion of the piano in a lot of songs. But it is something I am in love with. The piano is an instrument that has been used in so many different settings, from classical to jazz to modern pop. But hearing the piano in a Bollywood song like this, this was so completely different. It isn't like I haven't heard a piano played in music with the same meaning. That same emotional and moving kind of song, well, pianos often play a key role! But this was totally unlike all those other songs. The way the piano was used in this song is just spectacular. You feel the gentleness and the lightness in the keys while playing the piano. That soft vulnerability and tender love is communicated through the way the piano is played in this song. And it the fact that the piano is played in a much older style. This is played in an old swing piano style, The great singers of the 40's and 50's, this is the slower kind of piano sound they would perform to. Why it is completely understandable as to why I want to slow dance with someone to this song. It is kind of funny, the things this song makes me visualize. With this song, I see myself outside in winter, probably in London. But there is snow on the ground, and a soft snowfall is accompanied by the slightest breeze. It is that stereotypical romantic winter, where everything is silent but beautiful. The fresh, white snow and the calm atmosphere just overwhelm you in that wonderful way. It makes you feel so warm inside and makes you want to smile because in that moment you want to feel everything. It is the kind of moment you want suspended in time. And I see myself there, walking on a path with trees surrounded the cobblestone walkway, a vintage streetlamp hosting a candle. I know, a weirdly cliche image, but also a completely magical one. But moving back to the song, I am so happy to finally have posted a song featuring Sonu Nigam! This man is one of the greatest playback singers ever. A lot of the songs I listened to growing up were sung by him, and a great number of my favorited songs are sung by him as well. Sonu Nigam has one of the most calming and soothing and beautiful voices I have ever heard. He can bring more power to his voice when he needs to, but generally sings the way he does in this song. When he sings, you feel every word. It doesn't sound like someone singing a song, it sounds like someone pouring their heart out. Sonu Nigam has this warm voice that is very gentle. I think that is one of the things that makes his voice so spectacular. It is gentle and soft and moving and so hard to describe in words. I honestly have no proper or way to describe his voice, at least not something that would do his voice any justice. His is a voice you have to hear to understand. But regardless, the components of this song coming together, well, it makes for a magical song. Today's instrumental song comes from the movie Hachiko. This is a song that features the teamwork of a piano and orchestral strings. They compliment eachother so well, the piano taking the melody sometimes and the strings the other times. It isn't often that you find music like this, and this score was one that really took me by surprise. It is beautiful and hopeful and sad all at the same time and that expression of emotion is something that we will never be able to describe. We can only hear and experience it through the music. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
