Jon Bellion and Big Hero 6
Today I have music for you by an R&B artist by the name Jon Bellion. I won't lie, I am not necessarily a fan of all of his work, but I definitely do respect his style of music and production. Jon Bellion has a nice smooth voice that can be used in R&B situations, but contains hints of a slightly emo band kind of sound. He has a higher vocal range than other artists, but it kind of suits the way his music is. Jon Bellion is an artist that juxtaposes a lot. For example, with this song, we get his lovely and soft voice to create a nice kind of atmosphere. In fact, his voice kind of reminds me of Owl City's. However the lyrical content of the song is more about depression and hitting rock bottom. The background is a happier and brighter kind of indie sound, something that doesn't really go along with the lyrics in the song. But somehow, Jon Bellion makes it work. Jon Bellion's work is more breathy and airy, and even though a lot of the musical accompaniment is the product of computer software, he is still able to completely humanize the music. Jon Bellion has a distinct and unique pop sound that sets him apart from a lot of the other synth pop based artists out there. What I think is really cool is that Jon Bellion seems to be taking a turn towards psychedelic music and more ambient kind of music. With this song, we definitely do get a sense of that psychedelic nature through the blending of pitched and glitched vocals and his own unique computer work. There are so many things, like the little shrieks, that make this song so unique in comparison to everything else we hear on a daily basis. I think Jon Bellion is an artist we should all be on the lookout for because I think he has the ability to go quite far. Today's instrumental song is from the movie Big Hero 6. I thought this movie was absolutely adorable and incredibly well done. The score is of course lovely, but rather dark for an animated film. Again, we get that juxtaposition between what we see and what we hear, creating a conflicting atmosphere. It is actually quite spectacular! I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
