Placebo and Max Ablitzer
Today's song is by the London native band, Placebo. This song has a very eerie and haunting sound to it, that is so entrancing and beautifully dark. The lead vocals mixed with the accompanying music gives this song a deeper, colder, and darker meaning to the song, compared to the original. I prefer this version myself, but that of course is subject to opinion! I love this song and find it chilling and haunting. It is the kind of song that can send those deep shivers up your spine and through your entire being. But these are not chills of fear or horror. These are ones of truly feeling. There is so much depth to the way this song is structured and performed. When you hear the original song, there is more of a dance vibe and 80's vibe to the song. I personally don't think it goes well with the darkness that is written into the words of the song. But Placebo takes full advantage of the ability to make this a haunting and eerie song. This is a song that relies heavily on the bass and keyboard synthesizers. By using these two as the main backbone of the song, we can get that deeper thrum, the kind that you can physically feel. Layered on top of this is some beautiful piano work. While it is simple, the chords used are the kind that create a sense of mystery and spectral. There is this overlying eeriness to the song that comes with the piano melodies because of its extreme clarity being superimposed over the darker tones. My absolute favorite part of this song is when the bass guitar is brought in and at about 3:00 minutes. The bass guitar is essentially the only instrument used at this point, but that as a backdrop the vocals is simply ambient and gives the song a transcendent sound. The vocals are slightly muffled by multiple layers, but that just makes the moment even more impactful. Placebo has taken this 80's pop song and turned it into something so emotional and full of levity and it is simply breathtaking. Today's instrumental song is composed by Max Ablitzer. Not only is this song also hauntingly beautiful and dark, the video that goes along with it emphasizes the surge and quell of emotions. It is brilliant and captivating. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
