Troye Sivan and Interstellar

Today I have some chill music for you. This song is by Troye Sivan, better known as being a popular Youtuber and actor. This song is a very interesting one for a few reasons. The first thing that kind of struck me was how soulful his voice is. Troye Sivan hasn't even hit 20 years old, yet his voice is so incredibly soulful. The first few opening notes kind of blew me away because they just ooze smoothness and sensuality. This song is not meant to be sensual at all, but there is still something almost hungry about the way Troye Sivan sings this. This song is also a surprisingly dark pop anthem. The chillstep vibe does not give away the demons and shadows that seem to haunt the lyrics. This song is completed with a downtempo electronic sound and melancholy lyrics to create this image and feeling as if you are world-weary. This song is moody and existential, a complete turnaround from the music we hear from most pop stars these days, especially teen stars. Troye Sivan is completely aware of the world around him and is continues to observe the way society works, driving him to write lyrics like this. There is so much isolation and utter loneliness painted into his words. There is this totally sadness in the fact that he feels unfulfilled in a world where consumption is everything. From drugs and alcohol to materialistic goods, nothing seems to satiate his feelings and soul. Nothing seems to take away the alienation he feels. The chorus talks about how he tries to find relief, albeit through some questionable means, but it does come down to the fact that he still finds no happiness with those methods. This song almost critiques the go to coping mechanisms of society. The fact that people will consume their problems away or drown them in drugs in alcohol. But at the end of the day, there is still this sense of not knowing who you are. I was take aback to hear these lyrics come from a guy who is still a teen. There is so much darkness and sadness and pain woven into these lyrics. This song is a really nice ambient production that speaks with volume and depth and I love the boldness in the lyrics. This is a song that makes the music something so pleasing and calming so that we are able to sink into the meaning of the lyrics. I really like that aspect and I am really excited to see what else Troye Sivan has to offer. Clearly this is a man that has many layers and has a smooth voice to frost everything over with. Today's instrumental song is from the movie Interstellar. This is probably the most talked about movie, and I guess for good reason! While I am still behind and have not seen the movie, I have heard the movie score and have to say that Hans Zimmer has done it again. There is something so inherently haunting and eerie and suspenseful about this score. Whether it is to capture the impending expanse of space, or the dangers met at every turn, Hans Zimmer captures every single moment in crisp musical clarity. This specific composition is one that starts out slowly and builds to crescendo of strings and striking organ work. The organ is the star of this composition and that creates an even more eerie tone because the organ is something we associate with the dark. I am in awe of this score and hopefully will be able to soon put scenes from the movie to the actual score. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
