The 1975 and Rooney

Today I have music for you by a band that I am absolutely in love with. The 1975 really blew up and and stormed to the forefront of the rock and indie world. This is a band that is equal parts ethereal and synth pop. Now I really like that because it gives the band a slightly old school kind of song and also gives them a style that is utterly recognizable. Matt Healy provides these smooth vocals that are often hauntingly beautiful or a soft, mellow jilted sound. With the vocals we hear, you can clearly tell that there is an accent there. I personally find that extremely charming and very unique. I have never heard a voice like Matt Healy's, and I could not think of a better voice to go with the kind of music The 1975 produces. The 1975 has this melancholic undertone to every one of their songs. Even the songs that are more pop oriented and energetic have this underlying melancholy and darkness to it. The 1975 aesthetically expresses this kind of juxtaposition with the consistent use of black and white. Pretty much every image of the band is strictly black and white, and when they perform, the stage is simply black and white lighting. They even dress in black and white to perform. The 1975 creates this tapestry of major keys and classic pop type melodies to create their music. This is not a band that likes to create that dissonance that many other bands use to grab our attention. The 1975 likes keeping everything sweet and major, despite the fact that their lyrics are anything but sweet. That could be the point though. Expressing the idea that life is full of these kinds of opposing forces. But the lyrical content of The 1975 usually revolves around the reality of drugs, alcohol, and sex. The things is, this is a band that knows first hand what it is like to be involved in all three of these. This makes their music that more powerful because they perform and produce music that comes from a place of experience and understanding. This song in particular is a nice showcase of a jazzy guitar and sultry vocals. This is the kind of song that you would lounge around to or if you are like me, dance a little bit to. This is a song that is a little harder to sit still to. That funkier guitar work really drives the dynamism of this song and gives it a little bit more of an energetic and bubblier kind of sound. I can't deny how nice the saxophone sounds with this song as well. This band is one that is so rich in terms of musical variability and originality. There aren't any bands out there quite like this one. From the way they produce music to the overall sound they have to the kinds of lyrics they write, The 1975 is a band that I will follow forever. Today's instrumental song is by the band Rooney. This band is one that really employs the 80's synth and guitar kind of sound. This is my absolute favorite song by them because it has this infectious energy to it despite being a song that is a little bit darker in terms of content. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
