Lana Del Rey and Edward Scissorhands

Today I have music from two movies that have come out within the past year. This first song is by the incredible vocalist Lana Del Rey. She did a remake of the beautiful theme from the movie Sleeping Beauty. Now this version of the song is used in the movie Maleficent. For those of you who have never see the movie Maleficent, it tells an alternate story line and different thread of the characters involved with Sleeping Beauty. In this movie, Maleficent is not the villain, but rather more of an antihero. She is someone who becomes twisted by betrayal, but is fixed by the love of family. What this movie does is not only put a dark spin on the story of Sleeping Beauty, but also gives so much more depth to the character Maleficent. This really is a great movie, filled with both darkness and bursts of light. Now, on to the song. Lana Del Rey's rendition of this popular classic reflects that darkness which is in the movie. Like the movie, this song is draped in overall sense of darkness. This song has lyrics that are meant to be beautiful and lovely and happy. However, the way that Lana Del Rey performs this song, adds this incredible eeriness and hauntingly beautiful to the already sweet song. Her voice is slightly muffled and she sings in her lovely lower voice to create that captivating sound. Lana Del Rey has a voice that can enchant you in a way that many other voices cannot. The music she uses in the background is simple incredible. With the way the song is interpreted along with the movie, there is a heavy focus on the string members of the orchestra. The entire song has this underlying dark tone to it while some of the melodies have a little bit of a brighter sound. But throughout, you have this seamless weaving of dark and light coming to the forefront all the while supporting the somber voice of Lana Del Rey. There is this overall spookiness to the song that one would not normally associate with a Disney film, but that chilling sound is what makes this song so beautiful and perfect for the movie. Even the character of Maleficent has that mix of being both loving and ominous. There is something sultry and creepy and ethereal about the way Lana Del Rey. The movie and song both have that ethereal nature to it, something that is not quite attached to the ground. I have to say, this rendition is simply spectacular. Today's instrumental song is from the movie Edward Scissorhands. This movie was absolutely phenomenal. Not many people have seen it, which is a total and complete shame. However, even if you haven't seen the movie, you can revel in the beauty that is the soundtrack. One thing I can say about Tim Burton films is that the soundtracks are always incredible. This song in particular has this mix between the darker aspects of the movie and lighter tones of hope and love. Movies and songs like this express the reality of the world and life in a way that can be hard to express through words. Edward Scissorhands is a movie that is worthy of so much praise, as is the soundtrack. This song uses the strings to make a song that touches the soul and includes slight choral voices to make the song have that light of hope. It is beautiful in a way that is so hard to describe. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
