Olly Murs and Chaplin
Today's song is by an incredible singer, Olly Murs. His musical style is old-timey pop. I love this song because the music sounds like it could have come from the 50's, a hint of jazz and swing. It has been quite some time since I have posted a song like this so this is a nice change! Olly Murs has so much skill as a performer for a couple of reasons. First, he knows how to engage an audience really well. He knows how to interact with people in a way that is adorable and fun. Second, Olly Murs has quite the voice. He was a contestant on the X Factor UK so it is apparent that he has quite a bit of vocal talent. One of the things that is really different about Olly Murs is that his voice is a mix of traditional pop and modern pop. In this song you will be able to hear the influence of both eras of pop in his song and on his vocal arrangements. He sings this song with so much energy which is a component of both styles of pop. However, the lyrics and the stylization of the chorus is more akin to modern pop. The way the verses are done and the choral nature of the main verses is more on the traditional side of pop. This song has a good flavor mix of the two styles. Not only does Olly Murs sing this with a lot of energy and vivacity, but the music itself is also very lively. This song is just one of those really feel good songs that you can't get tired of. Olly Murs also has slower, more intimate songs and more pop songs. However, this being one of my favorite songs by him, the faster songs are not half bad either. I recommend listening to more of his music as a cure to musical stagnation! Today's instrumental song is from the movie Chaplin. This song captures so much about the character of Chaplin from the time period to the silly nature that defines Chaplin. This song has a lot more orchestral involvement than it does big band, yet it does have that slight swing appeal to it. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
