Sebastian Yatra and Danny Ocean
It has been quite some time since I have sent some Spanish/Latin music this way, so today is all about those reggaeton beats. But this time around, it isn't the pumped-up dance music that I normally like to talk about. Today I have Latin music which airs more on the romantic side. Now this song does not have the long, drawn-out notes which accompany many romantic songs. This song still has a lively energy and a fun sound, while maintaining a sweetness which will make anyone blush.
To start off with some introductions, this song is by the Colombian singer-songwriter, Sebastian Yatra. And his voice is absolutely beautiful. There are so many things I love about Latin singers. First of all, every singer has their own signature catchphrase. Whether it is a cool way to say their name or some kind of signature sound effect, you can often tell who has created a song based on these highly unique and identifying sounds. Second, Latin singers sing their lyrics with a plethora of romantic passion and emotional prowess. It is honestly amazing to hear how these Latin singers use dramatic emotions and impulses to create a dynamic vocal experience and vice versa. The dramatic performance of the vocals allows us to feel that fiery romantic nature. Third, there is a beautiful cadence to the way the lyrics are delivered in Latin pop songs. It is purposeful and smooth like freshly packaged butter. The words seem to flow from the mouth like water in a river. The vocals are woven in and out of the rhythmic patterns of the song so that they may follow that wonderful reggaeton beat. Now Sebastian Yatra has all of these qualities. In addition, he has deep and rich vocals to sing the amorous words. His voice doesn't rumble in depth, nor does it squeak in higher pitches. Sebastian Yatra has an even-keeled voice, one that is full of body. As Sebastian Yatra's vocals and lyrics are meant to be the focus of this song, it may be worth trying to catch some of these characteristics as you listen through.
The musicality behind the song isn't' too complex. In fact, it follows a very standard reggaeton beat and is set to lovely tropical house vibes. That kind of sound is natural territory for reggaeton. But what I do find a bit interesting and very lovely, is how gentle this song is. Often times, reggaeton is very energy filled and can be a little aggressive. But this track is much more laidback and really takes on the "fun in the sun" kind of soundscape. We get some nice steel drum work in the background which adds a bubblier pep to the song, and the overall instrumental work we hear is focused on brighter notes and patterns. Knowing this song is supposed to be romantic, makes it more understandable as to why this soundscape is so interesting. We have a more vulnerable reggaeton song!
This is one of the first songs I have heard by Sebastian Yatra, and I really enjoy everything about it. This is an artist I will keep track of and explore more, so stay tuned and you may see his name pop up again!
Today's instrumental song is by a singer I happen to also love, by the name Danny Ocean. I have talked about some of his work in the past, but this track has to be my absolute favorite by him. This is another reggaeton song which has taken on a softer quality due to its romantic nature. This song though has a larger tropical influence in the instrumentation. But we also do find a nicely repetitive drum rhythm which serves as the backbone of the song. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
