George Ezra and The Dap-Kings

Today I have some really new music for you. In fact, over the course of the next few days, I want to bring a lot of new music to the blog, so stay tuned! But for now, I want to start with a recent release by one of my favorite folk and blues singers, George Ezra. I haven't spent as much time talking about him, which is just bad on my part. But I absolutely had to share this song going into this wave of new music.

One of the things that make George Ezra such a special artist, is how simple and heartfelt his songs are. Each song is filled with incredible amounts of soul. And when I soul in this particular context, I don't mean "soul" as a genre of music. There is genuinely so much life and so much of George Ezra's personality that goes into each and every song. Every word that he sings is filled with meaning and belief. We hear that a lot in this song especially because it's all about facing personal battles. This particular topic has lead to some of the greatest music I have ever heard, and for good reason. You don't really learn about yourself until you have to face the internal battlefield. But that struggle brought out so much of George Ezra's soul as he channeled his journey into music.

In this song, we hear more nonchalance, but it's in a way that cares free and high spirited. This is a sunnier song which revolves around the idea that we are going to be okay. The upbeat and bubbly nature of the song is an absolutely wonderful soundscape for the lyrics. George Ezra doesn't take a pop route to get to that happy and light-hearted mood. A lot of artists do because let's face it, that is what is generally for. Instead, we get a riotous ensemble, filling the air with heart warming and feel good sounds. The combination of guitar, tambourine, drums give the song the substance it needs. The brass section, well that happens to be the cherry on top. The happy go lucky endearment of the song comes primarily from having a robust brass section. It brings a bouncy and fun loving tone to the song, driving home the idea that some things really don't matter now.

George Ezra's warm baritone is such a cozy and loveable part of the song. What I like about it, is that it is simple. When he sings, there are no tweaks to autotune, no distortion or recorded loops. Everything is sung by the man himself, and that has to be one of the greatest things about him. If we were to strip down a song by George Ezra, he would be able to carry the entire song a capella. The simplicity lies in the fact that he really doesn't do anything to his voice. George Ezra consistently lets us hear his raw and natural voice, a voice that is smooth like butter. I simply cannot get enough of George Ezra. This is just his new single, and I am so excited to hear him drop even more!

Today's instrumental song is by the Dap-Kings. These guys were a soul and funk kind of band, two sounds that George Ezra managed to capture in his song. This song has a lot of groove and is so much fun. This is another one of those light-hearted songs for light-footed people. You can't help but have a smile on your face when listening to music like this. The Dap-Kings have spoiled us with jamming trumpet solos, bongo drums, thumping bass guitars, and more. I definitely recommend the Dap Kings to anyone and everyone because they have music which is so incredibly fun to listen to and enjoy. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
