Nat King Cole and Paperman
It has been an absurdly long time since I have posted any sort of swing or jazz style music. So, today I have music for you by the wonderfully talented Nat King Cole. This song is very popular in the world of romance and jazz, and for good reason. This song oozes style and grace in a way that was so special and particular to that era in music. This is a simple piano melody but it still carries the romantic and lovely feel that an orchestral or big band piece would give you. Nat King Cole is not only an accomplished pianist, but a singer who has indescribable talent and passion. Even though he passed away almost 50 years ago, his music and singing is a timeless classic and masterpiece that is still popular. His popularity doesn't span one specific age group or country either. People all over the world continue to listen to his smooth baritone voice and jazzy piano. This song in particular is very sweet and I think the most moving part of the song is the simplicity to which was produced. All he has is his piano and voice and yet, Nat King Cole can still make us entranced. This song is one that you can get completely lost in and is one that I would love to slow dance to. While it does feature a single instrument, this song still has the capability to be danced to. Granted, it would be a ballroom styled dance, but nonetheless something that you can still move and sway to. The credit has to go to Nat King Cole's ability as a jazz musician and pianist. Throughout the entirety of the song, the jazz influence on the music is clearly evident. From the phrasing to the rhythmic structure, this song screams slow jazz. However, even though this has a jazz feel to it, I would not want to add any other jazz instrument to the song. Any other addition would take away the sincerity to the simplicity. The lyrics are also a sign of sincerity and a genuine nature. Nowadays, so called love songs lack the elegance and sophistication that songs like these provide. The lyrics in these jazz and swing songs have much more meaning and go beyond the idea of being "in love." These lyrics really express how the musician feels and when combined with the piano playing in this song, Nat King Cole really expresses his genuine love for someone. This song has something completely and utterly spellbinding and I find it very hard to draw myself away from simply listening to the song. There is something so special about this type of music and the era from which it belongs. This is music I would not mind having to listen to constantly. Today's instrumental piece is from the short film Paperman. This is a very adorable and sweet short film and I really hope you guys go watch it. Yes it is a silent short, but the silence makes the picture even clearer and meaningful. The music that was scored for this short is absolutely beautiful and very fitting. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
