Keeping It Fresh

Hey everyone! I have been a bit MIA for the past week, I know. I was traveling for a bit and wasn't able to keep posting, but since I am back I am ready to start talking about some music! And to start us off, I wanted to post music which originates from the place I spent my last week - Korea. This is always an interesting style of music for me to write about because of how little yet incredibly well known Korean music is. Recently, we have seen the explosoin of Korean boy band BTS, as they have made their American debut and more. But, while this music is super hype and very well done, there are many other styles of Korean music out there other than K-pop. Which is what I have for you today! Korean rap has to be one of the greatest styles of rap I have ever heard. There is so much that goes on throughout the song, from incredibly clever lyrics to sick beats. Today I have some music for you by an artist that I've spent some time listening to in the past, but recently go back into. It isn't often that we get female rappers on the scene, and it's equally as rare to see female artists who perform like today's artist does. 070 Shake is one of the most unique artists out there. Now to be completely honest, I was a bit confused about the name of the group, thinking the lead rapper's name is 070 Shake. Just to clear things up, the female rapper is known as Shake and the rest of this contemporary rap group is 070. Hence the project's name. But this has to be one of the most interesting groups to listen to because of how different they sound. The group is led by female rapper Shake, who has a voice that is incredibly recognizable and almost trademark. Today I have some music for you by an artist called Always Never. This is a super nice and chilled out song, something that I have been able to listen for days. It has a seductive smoothness to it, one that can catch you by surprise with its subtly lustful sound. I have to admit, I really like how Always Never has made the song to be so effortlessly smooth and even a but sexy. One of the things to note about this track is how it seems to fall into this newer and growing style of R&B. This emerging style relies a bit more on synths and electronic work to create an ambient sound, while the vocals hang onto a more soulful and R&B sound. Part of what makes this song really work, and one of the things I really like about this song, is that there is a darker undertone to some parts of the song. It's been a bit of a while, but back again with some new music for you! And today's track comes from an artist who has made quite a breakthrough this past year. The New York based singer-songwriter known as Lauv has been making waves out of the underground circuit, making his name and music known to a wider audience. I've talked about some of his music in the past, but I am particularly excited to talk about this song because of how different it is from the rest of the music we tend to hear from Lauv. As the creator and producer of his own music, Lauv has brilliantly created a stylistic sound for himself, one that makes him a recognizable artist among the rest. His music is characterized by soothing sounds, a hint of seduction, and emotion. The way these motifs are portrayed in the music is always different, but somehow the compositions still have a signature style. This song is unlike pretty much every track Lauv has released though. Today I have a new track for you which features one of my favorite R&B singers to have surfaced within the past couple of years. I wasn't familiar with the artistic duo Whole Doubts until I heard this song. Well to be fair, I wasn't familiar with this side project called Whole Doubts. Interestingly enough, we have heard quite a bit of their work in the past as the composers of some of the biggest pop songs. But as a "solo" project, this is a fresh listen. This track is Whole Doubts' official debut track, and I am a huge fan. This track seems like a very experimental one, as Whole Doubts wades its way into an interesting a genre-bending soundscape. This track is a subtle banger. We don't necessarily expect to hear what we do, but it works in a way which is fun and vivacious, without being overly energetic or crazy. Today I have some music for you by a very very interesting artist. This song is by the singer Tyler Carter. He started out as a metalcore band singer. He actually sang for the band Woe, Is Me which is a pretty hardcore band, I have to say. Now here is where it gets deliciously interesting. This song showcases the big surprise Tyler Carter sprung on us because his vocals make a complete turnaround. And when I say complete, I mean he jumped across the spectrum and has nestled himself on another side. Because in this song, we get to hear how sexy and seductive his voice can be as an R&B singer! It is quite the plot twist if you ask me. I have heard of punk going pop. I mean, there is even a series of albums that deal with that. But a metal singer going solo to sing R&B? That is so unheard of and rare to hear, and I absolutely love it! It has been quite some time since I posted anything electronic or EDM related, so I thought that would be a fun way to start up today's post. So today, I have some music for you by one of my favorite electronic artists, Flight Facilities. As we all know, EDM tends to be a wide but really fun genre of music. There are so many subgenres and sounds that are under the umbrella of EDM, and today we are going down the path of house and disco. I think the first thing I have to address when talking about this song, is Flight Facilities as a music duo. This is one of the most risk-averse artists to listen to because you will always find something to like. You may not like every song, but there will be a few that you can definitely jam to. This is all because of the musical style with which the duo has defined for themselves. I think many producers easily give this duo a nod of approval because of how dynamic the music is.
